Podcasting About Podcasting With Neville Hobson

Episode #230 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.

This past week, I wrote a Blog post titled, The Selfish Art of Podcasting. Well, if there's one episode that I can point to as an example of that kind of selfishness, this one would be it. While visiting London for less than 24-hours a few weeks back, I was thrilled to finally meet Neville Hobson in person for breakfast. I've been connected to Neville for almost six years now, but we've never met in our "protein forms" (as I like to call it). Hobson is the co-host (along with Shel Holtz) of the incredible PR and communications Podcast,For Immediate Release - The Hobson & Holtz Report. These two have been producing shows since January 2005 (they're close to publishing episode #575!). They are - without question - pioneers in the business Podcasting space, and Hobson's perspective on all things Social Media and Communications illustrate both his experience and passion for the space. This was also my first attempt at recording a conversation using the HT Recorder iPhone app (I think the results are amazing). Enjoy the conversation...

    For me the HT IPhone app needs a little tweaking Mitch, it's ability to pick up background conversation was a little distracting. Maybe I am just old school?

    I listened to this walking four dogs in -20°C here in Sweden. Such a great discussion that I hardly noticed the cold!

    Thanks for interviewing Neville. I'm a fan of both your podcast and FIR and it was good to hear Neville in a slightly different role rather than the show with Shel.

    The one question I missed really was how to we get B2Bs to really dare to take on podcasting as a medium. I know you talked about it's uses but I still see the C-suite struggling to grasp its potentil.

    • I think Podcasting can be most powerful for B2B. If you think about how the sales works (white papers, testimonials, etc...)... imagine doing that with audio or video... really showing, telling stories and demos...

    Oh, I agree Mitch. The trouble is how do you persuade the C-suite to invest in this. And then get people to listen in the first place.

    Thought leadership works with podcasting. So does entertainment and education. For B2B podcasts to work they have to tap into this golden triangle.

    • Start small and cheap and inside the organization - do it as a skunkworks projects. Grab an audio recorder and interview some folks, put it out to the team as the new audio newsletter and see how people feel about... once the c-suite realizes how much more human (and cheaper) it is, they may start to see the light.

        Agree on this Mitch, did exactly this for the Adnams Podcast. Got an audio recorder and took the wine buyers to lunch a couple of times, a la 'Media Hacks', and got them to talk about their week.

        Now I don't even have to go, they take it with them every time they go out, I now have trouble keeping up posting them.
