Douglas Rushkoff Discusses The Power Of Creating Value

Douglas Rushkoff is a very smart thinker.

His latest book is called, Life Inc. - How The World Became A Corporation And How To Take It Back, and he has ten other best-selling books on new media and pop culture (including: Cyberia, Media Virus, Playing the Future, Nothing Sacred: The Truth about Judaism, Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out and Coercion, winner of the Marshall Mcluhan Award for best media book). He does tons of teaching, public speaking, produces and writes documentaries (The Merchants of Cool and The Persuaders), and has even written a series of graphic novels for Vertigo called, Testament (with another series on the way).

He spoke at the recent Web 2.0 Expo in New York City (November 2009) and his topic was titled: Radical Abundance: How We Get Past "Free" and Learn to Exchange Value Again.

This is a very deep and rich lecture (and well worth your 15 minutes to watch and think about):

He is quite a character in deed. I realy enjoyed his Merchants of cool documentary...Being a father and concious it was interesting to see the mechanics of the marketing that is applied to my own kids...

He also was able to communicate the dilema of our financial system in Life inc...without falling into the conspiracy theory trap...

I enjoyed this talk alot....thanks for sharing...

  • I'm skeptical that "genuine creative output" (I take that as "originality") diminishes when the world offers their ideas for free on the Internet. I'm skeptical that a "copy culture" is a negative thing.

How many times has one idea sparked a new idea? There is still perceived value in consuming a compelling new TV show, even if the TV show was a copy of something previous. Even if the new TV show was based on an older show, the producers still included original elements and ideas to make the show relevant to a new audience.

For instance, if the audience laughs at the new show and wants to watch it again, the TV show has made a difference in their lives. Whether the show provided an escape for a depressing life or whether the show informed them of something new in the world, the audience found value in the show. From the audience's perspective, that new show made the world a better place for them.
